Professional Overview:
Devotes on treating vascular diseases and made great contributions to the development of vascular and endovascular surgery of China. Accomplished over 1000 aortic cases and first introduced Chimney technique treating on aortic dissection in China. He was invited and made presentation on endovascular aortic repair in more than 100 international conferences. Published 79 scientific papers on vascular surgery and 16 of them were indexed in SCI, published a monograph associated with vascular anatomy and surgery.
Specialized in the surgical and endovascular treatment of vascular diseases, focusing on large
vascular as well as peripheral diseases. Successively completed the world’s first superior mesenteric artery catheter-directed thrombolysis + portal vein thrombectomy + subcutaneous heparin pump for portal vein thrombosis, the world’s first multi-layer bare stent endovascular repair of traumatic abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm, and the world’s first endovascular repair of acute Stanford type B aortic dissection in late pregnancy. Is in the first wave to carry out “chimney” and “fenestration” techniques for endovascular repair of aortic diseases involving partial branches of aortic arch in China, which greatly reduces the risk and complications of previous thoracotomy for patients with such diseases. In Italy, Rome, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and other 16 countries undergo surgery demonstration and multinational consultation of more than 170 times, more than 10 time as the operator to do “the first case” in seven countries, training 195 medical specialists from 17 countries such as United States (Stanford university), Russia and etc.

“Dr. Mussa is nationally and internationally recognized as a thought leader in the treatment of aortic dissection. In 2023, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded Dr. Mussa along with colleagues from SUNY Downstate and Duke University, the IMPROVE-AD trial. This is a multi-center, multi-million dollar, seven-year, randomized controlled trial examining the treatment efficacy of upfront thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) as compared to Standard of Care with medical therapy with selective TEVAR for patients with uncomplicated Type B aortic dissection (uTBAD). The primary outcomes of the trial were defined as: all-cause mortality and major aortic complications (MAC) at 4 years. IMPROVE-AD will be the most definitive study to address the management of uTBAD along with ancillary studies addressing genetics, imaging, and economic/quality of life outcomes. Dr. Mussa is a Distinguished Member of the Society of Vascular Surgery and serves as Distinguished Reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery”.
